Its Necesary Vaccinations to Visit Peru?

I’m always drawn back to Peru (average elevation: 5,100 ft / 1,555 m). It’s on my hit list and I keep checking it off over and over. There’s a sense of excitement every time I plan a new visit—I can’t resist the contrast between towering peaks and vibrant street stalls, the way ancient stone walls seem to call my name. I know little about any place that combines culture, history and natural beauty so seamlessly.

Vaccine Recommendations for Your Peru Trip

Before you head out, it’s wise to review recommended immunizations. These help you travel with confidence whether you stay in urban centers or venture into remote regions.

Essential Routine Immunizations

Most travelers already have these from childhood, but double-check your records or get boosters if needed.

  • Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR)
    • Two-dose series, at least four weeks apart
    • Lifetime immunity for most people
  • Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP or Tdap)
    • Booster every ten years for adults
    • Protects against respiratory and nervous-system complications
  • Varicella (Chickenpox)
    • Single dose if you’ve never had chickenpox
    • Prevents severe infection and shingles risk later in life
  • Polio
    • One adult booster if last dose was in childhood
  • Influenza
    • Annual shot to cover current flu strains

Travel-Specific Immunizations

These vaccines address risks tied to local food, water or wildlife encounters.

  • Hepatitis A
    • Two-dose series over six months
    • Guards against infection from contaminated food or water
  • Hepatitis B
    • Three doses over six months
    • Recommended if you’ll have medical procedures or prolonged stays
  • Typhoid
    • Injection or four-dose oral capsule
    • Protects against bacteria common in street-food settings
  • Yellow Fever
    • Single injection given at least ten days before travel
    • Required if you plan to visit the Amazon rainforest (near sea level: 650 ft / 200 m)
    • Certificate may be required on entry or exit
  • Rabies (optional)
    • Three-dose series over four weeks
    • Advisable for wildlife researchers, animal-health workers or remote trekkers

Entry Vaccination Requirements

Peru does not generally mandate any vaccines for entry. If you’re arriving from a country with yellow fever risk, you must present a valid vaccination certificate. Some airlines or onward destinations may also ask for proof, especially after Amazon visits.

Matching Vaccines to Your Itinerary

If you’re sticking to tourist hubs like Lima (elevation: 154 ft / 47 m), Cusco (11,155 ft / 3,400 m) and Machu Picchu (7,970 ft / 2,430 m), your must-haves are routine doses plus Hepatitis A and Typhoid. Heading into the jungle or rural villages calls for yellow fever and possibly rabies shots. Always adapt based on planned activities—swimming in mountain lakes, exploring archaeological zones or interacting with local farmers.

Important Disclaimer

I’m not a medical professional—this is general information. Before you travel, check with your doctor or a trusted travel-health clinic. Official guidance from the CDC and WHO can confirm the latest vaccine schedules and entry rules.

Personal Note from Our CEO

When Samantha Bangayan first visited Peru, she got MMR, DTaP, Hepatitis A and Typhoid. She felt secure exploring every corner—from bustling markets to hidden Andean trails. But everyone’s trip is different, so use her story as a starting point and tailor your shots to your own plans.
