Itinerary

DAY 1:

From the Andes to the Edge of the Amazon

The journey begins early, at 6:00 AM, with a pickup from my hotel in Cusco (3,399 meters / 11,152 feet). The drive itself is an adventure, descending from the mountains into the jungle. The first stop would be the pre-Inca funeral towers at Ninamarca, followed by a visit to the charming colonial town of Paucartambo (2,906 meters / 9,534 feet). I’m excited to see the locals in their traditional attire.

Next, we’d head to the Tres Cruces viewpoint for what I hope is a stunning panoramic view of the Amazon basin. From there, the descent into Manu National Park begins. I can’t wait for the first hike through the cloud forest, hoping to spot the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock and some monkeys. The day would end at Paradise Lodge, with a comfortable room and a delicious local dinner.

After a classic Amazonian breakfast, the day’s adventure continues with a drive to the Atalaya boat pier. On the way, there’s a planned stop at a viewpoint for another panoramic vista of the jungle and the Manu River. Then, we’d board a motorboat and head to the Palotoa Eco Reserve.

Along the way, we’d stop at Aguas Calientes for a refreshing dip in the natural hot springs while lunch is prepared—that sounds like perfection. After checking into our ensuite rooms at the eco-lodge, the day finishes with a night tour to spot some of the jungle’s nocturnal reptiles and insects.

This is the day the adventure gets even more real. After breakfast, we’d hike deeper into the pristine areas of the Amazon rainforest. I’m especially looking forward to learning about the different medicinal plants from our guide; it’s fascinating that natives still rely on them. The night would be spent camping in the heart of the Amazon. I can only imagine the sounds of the jungle as I fall asleep.

I’d wake up to the sound of chirping birds before hiking a different trail back to the lodge. This hike offers a chance to spot more wildlife, including black caimans. Once back at the lodge, breakfast will be served, followed by a free morning to just relax and soak in the Amazonian atmosphere.

After lunch, the plan is to take a native balsa raft to spot more birds and animals. After watching the sunset over the river, we’d return to the lodge for a campfire with drinks and a barbecue. It sounds like the perfect way to spend the last night in the jungle.

The final day starts with an early trip to the Macaw Clay Lick, an absolutely unmissable sight. I want to see the spectacle of hundreds of brightly colored macaws and parrots flocking to eat the mineral-rich clay. It’s one of the most iconic images of the Peruvian Amazon, and I need to see it for myself.

Afterward, we’d return to the lodge for a final breakfast, check out, and take the boat back to the Atalaya port on the Alto Madre de Dios River. From there, our driver would be waiting to take us on the scenic journey back to Cusco.
