This document outlines a four-day expedition into the Tambopata National Reserve. The operation is led by a local guide for an immersive experience in the Peruvian Amazon’s natural and cultural environments. Participants will navigate numerous jungle trails to observe distinct flora and fauna.

The two primary objectives for this four-day deployment are the Oxbow Lakes and the Macaws Clay Lick. The Tambopata Macaw Clay Lick is documented as the largest of its kind globally. This location provides a high probability of observing all six local species of Macaws and various parrots.

The Tambopata rainforest serves as a critical habitat for thirteen endangered species. These include giant otters harpy eagles and jaguars though observing apex predators like the jaguar is a matter of considerable uncertainty and luck.

Itinerary

DAY 1:

Arrival and Initial Immersion

Our personnel will meet you at your arrival point either the airport or bus terminal for transfer to our city office. Here you can store non-essential luggage for the duration of the expedition.

We will then execute a transfer via a 4X4 vehicle to the boat pier. At the pier we will board a boat for a ride to the lodge providing initial exposure to the Amazon’s biodiversity. After a standard Amazonian lunch the operation begins with a visit to Monkey Island. This island is a unique habitat supporting 13 species of monkeys. Our local expert will brief you on the life cycles and behaviors of the different monkey breeds present.

Following this we will use a rowing boat to reach a section of the jungle designated for a canopy walk. You will get a spectacular view of the entire rainforest from the treetop platform. Once you have had sufficient time for this activity you will quickly get the hang of it and we will return to the Tambopata ecolodge for dinner.

The chef will provide a meal composed of local Amazonian ingredients. After dinner we conduct a night tour to locate nocturnal animals snakes and alligators.

Following a typical breakfast we will board a motor boat to the Tambopata National Park control point or puesto de control. From this checkpoint it is a hike of approximately one and a half hours to Lake Sandoval. This trail is known for sightings of native birds and animals.

The guide will also identify various plants and explain their practical uses. Lake Sandoval itself has a high concentration of biodiversity. Here you can expect to see giant otters numerous butterfly species and various fish among other wildlife. We will navigate Lake Sandoval by canoe.

The expedition will then pause at a designated camp for lunch. Post-lunch there is an opportunity to swim in the clear water to cool down from the Amazonian heat. We will return to the lodge for dinner at approximately 1700 hours.

After a standard native breakfast we will hike along a riverbank to conduct fishing activities. The river system here is populated with piranhas.

We will catch several specimens and transport them back to the lodge. The chef will then prepare them as a local dish. Following lunch there will be a period for rest and to relax in the provided hammocks immersing yourself in the jungle’s ambient sounds.

Later in the evening we will hike to a different location to experience another canopy walk and a zip-lining course. A professional instructor will be present to ensure safety protocols are followed. The zip-lining part can be a bit touch and go for some but the supervision is thorough. We will then return to the lodge for dinner.

The final day of the Amazon Rainforest Experience begins early. We will take a motor boat to the expedition’s highlight the Macaws Clay Lick.

This is the world’s largest known clay lick. Each morning hundreds of Macaws and parrots gather to consume clay from the cliff face. It is understood that the clay contains mineral salts that are essential for their diet and help neutralize toxins from fruits they eat. After observing this event we will return to the lodge for breakfast. We will then pack our equipment and complete the check-out process.

On our way back to Puerto Maldonado we will stop at a native community island which is a bit off the beaten path. Here the guide will provide an introduction to the life and culture of the native inhabitants.

Upon reaching the boat pier in Puerto Maldonado we will conduct a brief tour of a local market to show you regional fruits and vegetables. We will then facilitate your transfer to the airport or bus terminal after a brief stop at our city office for you to get your bearings and collect your stored items.
